FILE TYPE INFORMATION

WAV (WAVEFORM AUDIO FILE FORMAT) Standard digital audio file format used for storing waveform data; allows audio recordings to be saved with different sampling rates and bitrates; often saved in a 44.1 KHz, 16-bit, stereo format, which is the standard format used for CD audio. WAV files are most often seen on Windows-based computers.

AIFF (AUDIO INTERCHANGE FILE FORMAT) High-quality audio file created using the (AIFF) file format; contains CD-quality audio stored in a non-compressed, lossless format, similar to .WAV files; commonly used to burn audio CDs. The AIFF file format is based on the Electronic Arts .IFF format and was originally developed by Apple Computer. Standard CD audio AIFF files are sampled at 44.1KHz, are 16-bit, and have two channels for stereo sound.

APPLE LOSSLESS (ALAC) is an audio codec developed by Apple and supported on iPhone, iPad, most iPods, Mac and iTunes. ALAC is a data compression method which reduces the size of audio files with no loss of information. A decoded ALAC stream is MPEG-4 Audio, and bit-for-bit identical to the original uncompressed audio file.

FLAC (FREE LOSSLESS AUDIO CODEC) is an audio compression format like MP3, but while MP3 uses a “lossy” compression, which basically discards audio information that humans can't hear, FLAC uses a lossless compression, which will not change the quality of the compressed audio.

NOTE: Some media players cannot play FLAC files, but you can download a free program like VLC MEDIA PLAYER to play FLAC files.
